## Mission Details

JPSS is the Nation's new-generation polar-orbiting operational environmental satellite system. As the backbone of the global observing system, JPSS polar satellites circle the Earth from pole to pole and cross the equator about 14 times daily in the afternoon orbit, providing full global coverage twice a day. JPSS delivers key observations for forecasting severe weather like hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards days in advance, and assessing environmental hazards such as droughts, forest fires, poor air quality, and harmful coastal waters.

**LAUNCHED:** JPSS launched on Nov 20, 2017, aboard a Delta II rocket.

The World of NOAA's JPSS-1 Satellite, Now Known as NOAA-20!

In 2017, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with the support of their partners at The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will launch the JPSS-1 satellite, the first operational satellite in NOAA’s next generation polar-orbiting satellite system.

This video takes you inside the world of JPSS-1, providing a look at some of the satellite’s incredible instruments and explaining its journey to space. Join us as we see it off on its mission to continue vital contributions to United States weather forecasting!
