Optimax Is Going to Mercury!
While NASA is celebrating its successful landing of the two Mars Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity) in January, a new Mission on the horizon that will capture everyone’s attention in mid-2004 - Mercury MESSENGER!
MESSENGER is a MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment,
GEochemistry and
Ranging mission to orbit the planet Mercury, and
photograph the planet's
surface through Optimax lenses. The mission is designed to scientifically
investigate Mercury and as a result, better understand the terrestrial planets
and their evolution. Unlike the Mariner 10 mission in 1974-75, when only 45%
of the planet’s surface was imaged, MESSENGER will be tasked to map the entire surface of Mercury through multiple
flybys.
Optimax lenses are installed on the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS), which is one of the components on MESSENGER. This instrument consists of wide-angle and narrow-angle imagers that will map landforms, track variations in surface spectra and gather topographic information. A pivot platform will help point it in whatever direction the scientists choose. The two instruments will enable MESSENGER to “see” in the same way human eyes
observe.
The scheduled launch date is May 2004 and the best place to obtain mission updates is
http://messenger.jhuapl.edu (click on “The Mission”, then “Mission Design” for the latest schedule).

Optimax Employee Profile…
Tom
Kelly – Controller
Tom Kelly, our Controller, joined Optimax in May 2001. His previous professional position was a Partner with a large, regional certified public accounting firm located in Rochester, New York. Over his twenty-five year career with this firm, Tom served many Not-For-Profit, Retail and Manufacturing clients. In addition, Tom served as the
firm’s IT leader. He is a 1975 graduate from St. John Fisher College with a BS degree in Accounting. Tom is a lifetime resident of Rochester, New York.
Tom married his high school sweetheart, Chris. They have three children, ranging in age from 15 to 22 years old.
Golf is a summer-time passion; his goal is to get his handicap down a couple of strokes, to 17 this year. In the fall and winter he enjoys watching the Buffalo Bills and downhill skiing. He also enjoys cooking for his family and recently started hiking with Chris. Tom is also a volunteer driver for a senior citizen program at his church.
When asked about his work experiences, Tom comments that “seeing a manufacturing company from the inside has been enlightening. Observing the day to day challenges of a progressive and technologically innovative company like Optimax, seeing the successes (and failures), and assisting management in positioning Optimax as the premier provider of prototype optics has made my time here tremendously rewarding both professionally and personally.”
