Workforce Development

To better serve our customers, increasing capacity and expanding manufacturing capabilities is a constant focus at Optimax. Workforce development plays a large role in each of these initiatives.

In 2001, Optimax began developing a curriculum for training our workforce. It began with some fundamental optics, wave theory, interference, light and color. It also covers topics in metrology, fabrication methods, and properties of optical glass. These training materials are used as part of on the job training. In spring of 2005, a new training area was created that includes a classroom and manufacturing area dedicated to training employees.

Today, Optimax is working to fill a 3rd shift with skilled opticians. As we hire new employees each month, workforce development is as important as ever. More resources – master opticians as trainers and manufacturing equipment - are being dedicated to our training cell and new education programs are being developed.

In addition to teaching technical skills that directly relate to manufacturing, each year a group of 10-15 employees undergo a 6 month-long leadership development program. In the program, employees are challenged to build leadership skills, expand their comfort zones and become even better leaders. The program focuses on the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership; challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way and encouraging the heart.

As our organization grows, employee training, education and personal growth will be the backbone of our success.

Facility and Capital Equipment Investment

Optimax invested more than two million dollars into capital equipment and facility improvements in 2007. The upgrades and equipment will further expand our manufacturing capabilities and increase capacity. The New York State Department of Economic Development and Empire State Development Corporation make these investments easier. Under the MAP Program, funded by these organizations, nearly 10% of our invested money will be reimbursed in the form of grants. We thank New York State for the help!

Some of the investments are:

  • Spherical and aspheric lens manufacturing equipment
  • Major upgrades to our HVAC system, increasing environmental control over temperature and humidity in our facility.
  • A new coating chamber that will be dedicated to high purity UV coatings.
  • New interferometers that will support more efficient lean manufacturing.
  • An IR spectrometer with the ability to measure coating performance into the deep IR, increasing coating capability.
  • IT Infrastructure Upgrades

Optimax Employee Profile:
Bob Martin

Bob Martin, Optimax’s Quality Assurance Manager, joined the team on April 11, 2005. As QA Manager, Bob is responsible for the smooth operation of Optimax’s quality assurance system, continual improvement initiatives, customer support on the quality of products and services and supplier quality performance issues. Bob came to Optimax with over 25 years experience in the Engineering and Sales fields. His Engineering career began at Gleason Works in Rochester, NY. After 7 1/2 years at Gleason Works, he accepted a Production Engineering position with Rando Machine Corporation in Macedon, NY and for 10 years designed equipment supplied to the Nonwovens and Textile industries. During his last 7 years at Rando Machine Corporation, before joining Optimax, he held the position of Sales Coordinator, selling production machinery worldwide.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Kelly - the couple recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They have a 22 year old daughter, Korie who is in college and a 16 year old son, Christopher who is currently a junior in high school. Bob is an avid sportsman who enjoys spending much of his extra time out in the woods hunting whitetail deer or fishing the lakes here in Upstate New York. He is also tough to beat at fantasy football (or so he claims)!

When asked what our customers can expect to see from a quality point of view, Bob states “It’s the policy of Optimax to provide our customers with optical components to their specifications and to exceed their expectations through exceptional service and delivery unrivaled in the optical industry”. It is Bob's mission to work closely with each customer to better understand their quality needs.
